Missed the School Choice Deadline 2026-2027? You Still Have Options

If you searched for the school choice deadline 2026-2027 hoping the window was still open, we'll give it to you straight: the statewide application period for the coming school year closed on June 1, 2026. Missing it stings, but it isn't the end of the road. Depending on where you live and your family's situation, you may still have a way into Cutter Morning Star this fall, and a clear plan if not.

Yes, the 2026-2027 Window Has Closed

Arkansas's School Choice window runs January 1 through June 1 every year. Applications for the 2026-2027 school year had to be postmarked, emailed, or hand-delivered by June 1, 2026, so new transfer applications under the standard process are no longer being accepted for this fall. That's the statewide rule, not a Cutter Morning Star policy.

Why so firm? The window gives every receiving district a reliable headcount before staffing and classroom planning for the fall, which is also why late applications can't simply be waved through.

The One Exception: Military and Uniformed Service Families

Active-duty military and uniformed service families are exempt from the deadline under Arkansas law. If that's your household, you can apply for a transfer right now, even in mid-July. Call the district office at (501) 262-2414, and we'll walk you through it the same day.

The exemption covers households where a parent or guardian serves on active duty in the armed forces or uniformed services, and it applies year-round, not just for a short grace period after the deadline.

Already Live in Our Zoned Area? You Don't Need Choice

Here's the relief valve a lot of July searchers miss: School Choice only applies to families who live outside the district they want to attend. If your address falls within Cutter Morning Star's boundary, you never needed a choice application in the first place. You can enroll as a resident family today, deadline or no deadline. Just moved to town? Our enrollment guide for new Hot Springs families covers the documents to bring and who to call.

Not certain which side of the boundary your address falls on? Don't guess. One phone call to the district office settles it in a couple of minutes.

Outside the Zone? Here's What Happens Next

If you live outside our boundary and missed the window, the standard path into CMS is closed until applications reopen. We won't pretend otherwise. What we can do is talk through your specific situation, because circumstances vary family to family, and our admissions team can tell you exactly where things stand for your child's grade level.

In the meantime, there are useful moves to make. Visit the campus, meet the front office, and get your documents in order so your January application takes minutes instead of days. Families who apply in the first week of the window put themselves well ahead of the capacity math.

Some families also use the year to get to know the district from the outside. Follow along with school news, come out to a ballgame, and let your child see the campus that's waiting for them.

Mark Your Calendar: The Next Window Opens January 2027

The next statewide window runs January 1 through June 1, 2027, for the 2027-2028 school year. Set a phone reminder for the first week of January. Applying early matters because a grade level can stop accepting choice applications once about 95 percent of its seats fill, and smaller grades fill fast.

One more reason not to drift until spring: returning choice families work the same window. Students already attending through the program reapply each year, so renewals and new applications all move through the same January-to-June pipeline.

When the window opens, you'll apply for school choice directly through our admissions page, and our guide to enrolling at Cutter Morning Star explains the whole process end to end.
