School Background

Cutter Morning Star Public Schools is a small public school district serving the rural communities east of Hot Springs in Garland County, Arkansas. The district was formed in 1922 when an election consolidated two earlier rural schools, Cutter and Morning Star. into a single district. Morning Star began as a one-room school located about five miles east of Hot Springs, taking its name from the nearby Morning Star Methodist Church.


The district has a long history of "firsts" in Garland County: it operated the county's first school buses as early as 1925 and built the first rural indoor gymnasium in 1928. The district's high school traces back to the 1925-26 school year, when it became one of the first options for rural families who previously had to travel into Hot Springs for a secondary education.


Today the district operates two schools on a shared campus at 2801 Spring Street: Cutter Morning Star Elementary School (PK–6) and Cutter Morning Star High School (7–12), and is widely known by its motto, "a small school with a big heart."
