We look forward to seeing everyone Thursday! Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Dear Parents and Students,
My name is Christi Nation and I am the new Career Coach for Cutter Morning Star. I help students choose the career that is right for them. I help them prepare for that path so they will be ready when they graduate. Their path could be college, trade school, apprenticeship, certifications or other. It depends on their preferences and aptitude. I am sending this email to the parents/guardians as well so they can participate in the process.
I will assess students' interests and aptitudes and guide them toward career paths that they might not have been aware of. I will teach them about how to get into college and/or into workforce apprenticeships. I was a first-generation college student and understand how much some students don’t know how to navigate the college process.
Here's what I can do for our students by teaching classes and meeting with students individually:
1. Help identify a students' career path based upon preferences, talent, and/or aptitude. I tell our students that I help them find their passion and help find the profession that earns the most money with that passion if it's the right fit. My goal for the students is for them to eventually gain financial independence, if at all possible, in their chosen careers and educate them about preparing for retirement at the end of their careers. Decisions they make now will affect them in the decades to come. I tell them things I wish I would have learned in Junior High and High School about achieving career goals.
2. Help them apply for college, trade school, or career opportunities right out of high school.
3. Help them apply for financial aid for scholarships. We will need the parents/guardians help filling out the financial aid form called a FAFSA during our students' senior year.
4. Help them identify scholarship opportunities and help with scholarship applications including them taking the ACT Exam as part of the college admissions requirement.
5. Educate the students about work-based learning opportunities such as internships, apprenticeships, and job shadowing.
6. Educate the students about Career and Technical Education programs such as Medical Professions, Pre-Engineering, Marine Technology, Pre-Educator, Automotive Service, Wood Technology, and Machine Tool Technology.
7. Educate the students about Academic Concurrent Credit (ACC). ACC is taking college courses in high school saving college tuition costs down the line.
8. Identify business and industry career opportunities in Garland County and surrounding areas and help students apply for those positions when appropriate.
9. Arrange field trips to visit colleges, businesses and industry so students can get a first hand look at what a particular career entails.
10. Arrange guest speakers of various professions to educate the students about their respective fields.
Here is a further explanation of the Career Coach Program:
Dr. Jerry Thomas, VP for Student Affairs at NPC, wrote a grant to place career coaches at local schools. Cutter Morning Star, Hot Springs, and Lake Hamilton are participating in the program this year.
The state program is through the Division of Career and Technical Education and is to ensure students are exposed to job training and educational opportunities beyond high school through career exploration, development, and planning to prepare for 21st-century jobs.
I will be at our CAPS Parent-Teacher Conferences on February 17th helping students and can answer questions in between conferences or any other time you would like to make an appointment to meet at the school.
Students & Parents/Guardians: Please reply to this email if you would like to meet. My office is right behind Mr. Stage's. I highly encourage all students and/or parents/guardians to visit with me individually to discuss their career plans.
Mr. Stage and I are working in tandem to help our students succeed.
I am super excited to help advance our students’ and Garland County’s future!!
Sincerely,
Christi Nation, M.A.
Career Coach
